Budapest
is Hungary's premier city. Situated on the
Danube, the city is composed of two banks;
Buda and Pest.
Having
lost vast swaths of territory in the Treaty
of Versailles, Hungary is now a fraction of
its former imperial size. For example, the
Croatian coastline is a Hungarian place.
Transylvania and Slovakia are also Hungarian
places. In all of these places one finds native
Hungarians, speaking Hungarian.
The
Hungarian language is unique and isolated
among other European languages. The language
hasn't changed significantly since Magyar
tribes left the Ural Steppes over 1000 years
ago.
Strategically
located in the Carpathian Basin, Budapest
has endured countless invasions, wars and
occupations from all directions.
Then
again, maybe its the spicy fish soup, thermal
baths and heroic & lovely people which
make it such an irresistable destination.
